Al Sprague (1938–2025) | Artist

Al Sprague was a master painter, sculptor, and art educator whose work immortalized the beauty, culture, and human spirit of Panama. Born in Colón, Panama, Sprague developed a deep, lifelong bond with his homeland, capturing its vibrant light, rich history, and everyday life across oil paintings, watercolors, etchings, and bronzes.
After earning a Master’s Degree in Fine Art from American University, Sprague returned to Panama to teach art and paint his surroundings. He became widely celebrated for his vivid depictions of:
  • The Panama Canal: Painting the operations, transit scenes, and the hardworking people who keep the waterway moving. His "Transit Collection" prominently adorns the upper rotunda of the Panama Canal Administration Building.
  • Panamanian Culture: Capturing the grace and movement of pollera dancers, local market vendors, fishermen, and everyday scenes across the Isthmus.
  • The Bahamas & Island Life: Capturing the turquoise waters, sun-drenched coastal landscapes, and vibrant maritime heritage of the Bahamian islands, where his love for sailing and the sea translated onto canvas.
  • American Fishermen: Honoring the grit, craft, and rugged daily lives of American fishermen and coastal watermen in candid, powerful action.
  • Historical Moments: Serving as a civilian combat artist during Operation Just Cause in 1989.

Over his prolific career, Sprague’s artwork appeared on Canal Zone and Panamanian postage stamps and entered prestigious collections worldwide. Revered for capturing the heart of the nation's culture, his pieces were frequently selected by the Panamanian government as official Gifts of State. Today, his legacy endures through Sprague Art and Pasha's Perch, curated by his family to share his vision, storytelling, and timeless craft with future generations.
